Why I Like to Write

When I was a kid, I was nerdy. Like, glasses-too-big-for-my-face, book-in-hand-at-recess kind of nerdy. It wasn’t until middle school that I realized I might actually be… cute? And possibly even cool-adjacent? But until then, books were my world. Reading was a safe escape from what, at times, was a very chaotic home environment. And writing? That was my way of making sense of it all.

If you’re into IFS (Internal Family Systems), I’ve got a part I lovingly call Glasses. She’s studious, emotionally observant, and casually throws around a ten-dollar word when a simpler one would do. Writing is her happy place. It always has been.

Grad school kind of sucked the fun out of writing for a bit—nothing kills creativity like APA format and 20-page treatment plans—but at my core, I’ve always been a writer. I’ve kept journals my entire life. Honestly, my biggest fear about losing my phone isn’t someone hacking my bank info—it’s someone reading my Notes App. That little folder is my sacred space: drafts of blog posts, half-formed thoughts, deep revelations, random to-do lists, and the occasional spicy text I never sent (because: growth).

Writing is therapeutic. I often prescribe it to my counseling clients—not because I’m trying to make them the next Brontë sister, but because writing slows the mind down enough for us to hear ourselves. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we assign journaling to evaluate thoughts, challenge distortions, and track patterns in mood and behavior. In simpler terms: writing helps you get real with yourself.

Journaling is a way to process what’s happened to you, but also what’s happening within you. Blogging, for me, is kind of like public journaling—with spellcheck. It’s a little cathartic, a little creative, and a lot of healing. And if what I write helps someone feel seen, understood, or less alone? Even better.

So yeah—this is why I write.
For little me. For healing. For connection.
And sometimes, just to let Glasses have her moment.

May your Notes App stay safe and your inner child stay curious,
LC
